Our Approach
The importance of bending the rules

We built the service we wished existed.

The Cognitive Collective started the way most good ideas do - with two best friends, really good coffee and a conversation that was supposed to last twenty minutes.

After years of supporting autistic and ADHD clients, we knew there was another way. Looking back, we realised we'd already been bending the rules for years, making adjustments wherever we could, adapting sessions, changing environments and finding different ways to communicate.

One afternoon, over an after-work coffee that was meant to help us switch off, one of us smiled and said, "If we ever had our own company, we'd do it completely differently." The other didn't need convincing.

What was supposed to be an hour of decompressing somehow became the beginning of The Cognitive Collective. Since that afternoon, everything we've built has been guided by one simple belief: people shouldn't have to change who they are to access exceptional support. Instead, support should adapt to them.

We don't think people should have to earn comfort.

Walking into therapy or an autism assessment can feel overwhelming enough without wondering whether you'll feel comfortable once you arrive. That's why we spend just as much time thinking about your experience before your appointment as we do during it.

We send photographs of the building and therapy rooms, provide clear directions, ask about sensory preferences in advance and carefully choose our clinic spaces with lighting, seating, accessibility and comfort in mind. Once you're here, we want you to make the space your own.

If that means kicking your shoes off, curling up in the chair, snacking, reaching for a fidget toy or bringing someone along for support, then that's exactly what we'll encourage. We know those things might seem small, but they send a much bigger message: this is a space designed around you, not one that expects you to adapt to it.

Therapy should adapt to people - not the other way around.

Every person who walks through our door experiences the world differently, so we don't believe there should be one "right" way to do therapy.

Evidence-based approaches are incredibly important, but they should always serve the individual, never the other way around. Sometimes that means slowing the pace of a session, asking a question differently or finding an entirely new way to communicate. Other times it means setting the plan aside because something more important needs space that day.

Our aim isn't to fit people into a therapeutic model; it's to understand how their mind works and build therapy around that. After all, meaningful support shouldn't require someone to think, communicate or process the world differently just to make therapy work.

The little things are never little.

Some people remember what was said during therapy, while others remember that someone remembered their favourite drink. We happily do both.

Whether it's keeping Diet Coke and bottled water in the fridge, remembering how you take your coffee, having a favourite pen ready, sending gentle reminders or making sure the room feels just right, we believe the smallest details often have the biggest impact.

Those thoughtful touches aren't extras to us—they're part of creating an experience where people feel genuinely welcomed, understood and cared for from the moment they arrive.

Relationships matter more than rules.

Above all else, we believe therapy is built on relationships.

Techniques and therapeutic models are important, but they only come to life when people feel safe enough to be themselves. That's why you'll often find laughter in our sessions, conversations about pets and special interests, and the kind of genuine human connection that can't be taught from a textbook. We don't see professionalism and authenticity as opposites; in fact, we believe the best therapy happens when they're beautifully balanced.

Our hope is that everyone who walks through our door feels a weight lift from their shoulders because, perhaps for the first time in a long time, they realise they don't have to perform, pretend or mask. They can simply arrive exactly as they are, knowing that's exactly who we were hoping to meet.

Like-minded people, shared values.

The Cognitive Collective has never just been about the two of us.

As we've grown, we've been incredibly careful about the people we've invited to join us. Every therapist in our team shares the same philosophy: to see the person before the diagnosis, to adapt rather than expect others to adapt, and to provide thoughtful, genuinely personalised care.
